USC continued its strong run on the recruiting trail Saturday with the addition of four-star defensive lineman Alifeleti Tuihalamaka, one of the top in-state prospects in the 2027 class. The Oaks Christian standout chose the Trojans over several major national programs, signaling another win for USC’s efforts to secure California’s top talent.

Tuihalamaka, listed at 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds, is regarded as one of the more physically developed defensive linemen in his class. Ranked No. 23 nationally at his position and No. 209 overall by recruiting services, he brings both production and versatility to the Trojans’ defensive front.

His recruitment included interest from Oregon, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Miami, and UCLA, with several schools hosting him on official visits. Interestingly, USC was not originally included in his planned official visit schedule, but remained a consistent presence throughout the process.

Despite that, the Trojans maintained steady communication and built momentum late in the cycle, with defensive ends coach Shaun Nua playing a central role in the pursuit. That persistence ultimately helped USC secure one of its most important defensive commitments in the cycle so far.

1. Recruitment Battle and Final Decision

Tuihalamaka’s recruitment was shaped by a wide national battle, as several Power Five programs pushed aggressively for his services. Oregon and Texas A&M were among the early frontrunners, while Notre Dame and Miami also remained in close contention through the spring evaluation period. He initially set official visits to Oregon, Texas A&M, and Cal, suggesting USC might not be his final destination. However, the Trojans continued to build a relationship behind the scenes, hosting him multiple times for unofficial visits and keeping him engaged throughout the process. Defensive line coach Shaun Nua emerged as the key recruiter for USC, helping to build trust and familiarity with the program’s defensive vision. That relationship proved crucial as Tuihalamaka narrowed his decision late in the cycle. Ultimately, the appeal of staying in-state, combined with USC’s long-term defensive plan, helped swing the decision in favor of the Trojans. His commitment adds another cornerstone piece to a defensive recruiting class that continues to gain national attention.

2. On-Field Production and Defensive Fit

On the field, Tuihalamaka delivered a standout junior season at Oaks Christian, finishing with 86 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, and eight sacks. His production reflects both his physical strength at the point of attack and his ability to disrupt plays in the backfield. He projects primarily as a defensive end in a five-technique alignment at the next level, giving USC flexibility in how it deploys him along the defensive front. His frame and skill set allow him to play multiple roles depending on down-and-distance situations. Evaluators praise his ability to set the edge in run defense while still offering pass-rush upside, a combination that makes him valuable in modern defensive schemes. That versatility fits well into USC’s evolving defensive identity. Under defensive leadership focused on improving trench play, Tuihalamaka is expected to compete for early development opportunities once he arrives on campus, especially given his physical maturity and production at the high school level.

3. USC’s Recruiting Momentum and Defensive Vision

With Tuihalamaka’s commitment, USC now holds 13 pledges in its 2027 recruiting class, which is currently ranked No. 3 nationally. The addition further strengthens a class already viewed as one of the most balanced in the country. He becomes the eighth blue-chip commitment in the cycle, reinforcing USC’s success in securing elite talent within California. The Trojans now have commitments from six of the state’s top 12 prospects, continuing a trend that began with their strong 2026 recruiting haul. Tuihalamaka also joins a defensive group that includes highly rated prospects such as edge rusher Mekai Brown and interior lineman Isaia Vandermade. Together, they form the foundation of a defensive rebuild aimed at improving line play and physicality. For head coach Lincoln Riley and his staff, the emphasis on building through the trenches remains clear. Tuihalamaka’s commitment represents another step toward establishing long-term depth and stability on the defensive side of the ball.
