The Utah State Aggies announced on Monday that former star linebacker Bobby Wagner will have his No. 9 jersey retired in a halftime ceremony scheduled for either the 2026 or 2027 season, with the exact date to be determined based on his availability. The honor places Wagner among the most celebrated figures in school history.
He will become just the third player in Utah State history to have his number retired, joining program legends Merlin Olsen (No. 71) and Elmer “Bear” Ward (No. 35). The recognition reflects both his collegiate dominance and his decorated professional career.
Wagner’s legacy spans from his standout years in Logan to a 14-year NFL career that established him as one of the premier linebackers of his generation. His impact at both levels has made him a defining figure in Aggies football history.
The announcement underscores Utah State’s long-standing pride in Wagner’s development and the rare career arc that followed his time in college football.
1. From Second-Round Pick to NFL Greatness
Wagner was selected 47th overall in the 2012 NFL Draft by the Seattle Seahawks, beginning what would become one of the most productive defensive careers of the modern era. He quickly established himself as a cornerstone of Seattle’s defense. Over 14 NFL seasons, primarily with Seattle, Wagner became a six-time First-Team All-Pro and five-time Second-Team All-Pro selection. He was also named to 10 Pro Bowls, cementing his reputation as a consistent elite performer. He played a central role in Seattle’s Super Bowl XLVIII championship team and was part of a dominant stretch that included consecutive Super Bowl appearances. His leadership anchored one of the league’s most feared defenses. Wagner’s career totals include 2,000 tackles, placing him third all-time in NFL history and just 60 shy of the all-time record.
2. Late-Career Production and Continued Excellence
Even in the later stages of his career, Wagner has remained highly productive. In 2025, he recorded 162 tackles, including 79 solo stops, along with 4.5 sacks, two interceptions, and four passes defended. He also posted a strong Pro Football Focus grade of 99.0 while missing only eight tackles, reinforcing his continued efficiency and reliability at age 34. After recent stints with the Washington Commanders on one-year deals, Wagner currently enters free agency still performing at a high level. His sustained production has kept him among the league’s most respected defensive players even well into his veteran years.
3. Dominant College Career at Utah State
Wagner’s legacy began at Utah State, where he started 46 of 48 games and finished his collegiate career with 446 tackles, tying him for the most in program history. His consistency made him one of the most dependable defenders in school history. He also recorded 29.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, four interceptions, three fumble recoveries, and one forced fumble, showcasing his all-around defensive impact. Twenty-three of his games featured double-digit tackles. A three-time First-Team All-Western Athletic Conference selection, Wagner led the Aggies in tackles for three consecutive seasons, including 147 in 2011, 133 in 2010, and 115 as a sophomore. He was named MVP and North Team Most Outstanding Player at the 2012 Senior Bowl and was later inducted into the Utah State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021, further solidifying his collegiate legacy.
