The New York Liberty entered Thursday night at Barclays Center aiming to build momentum and secure a fourth win in their last five games, but instead found themselves struggling to match the energy of the visiting Golden State Valkyries. Coming off a lengthy break, the Liberty appeared out of rhythm from the opening tip.

Golden State took advantage of New York’s sluggish start, dictating pace early and forcing the Liberty into difficult offensive possessions. By halftime, the Valkyries had established a surprising 42-34 lead.

The break between games seemed to affect the Liberty’s timing, particularly on the offensive end, where shot selection and ball movement lacked the usual sharpness. That allowed Golden State to control much of the first half flow.

The second half brought little relief for New York, as the Valkyries continued to extend their advantage and prevent the Liberty from settling into a consistent rhythm.

1. Valkyries Control Momentum Early

Golden State’s defensive pressure and pace set the tone early, disrupting New York’s half-court execution and limiting clean looks from key scorers. The Liberty struggled to establish interior touches or generate open perimeter shots. By maintaining consistent ball movement on offense, the Valkyries were able to capitalize on New York’s defensive lapses. Their ability to push tempo helped them sustain a lead through the first two quarters. The Liberty’s struggles were not just offensive, as communication breakdowns on defense allowed Golden State to find rhythm scoring stretches. Those issues carried into transition defense, where the Valkyries gained several easy opportunities. At halftime, the deficit reflected both execution issues for New York and disciplined, energetic play from Golden State.

2. Third-Quarter Surge Widens Gap

The turning point came in the third quarter, when Golden State elevated its intensity and extended control of the game. The Valkyries outscored the Liberty 21-12 in the period, creating a double-digit separation. New York’s offense continued to stall during this stretch, with possessions becoming increasingly difficult as Golden State tightened its defensive rotations. The Liberty were unable to generate sustained scoring runs. On the other end, the Valkyries maintained efficient shot selection, converting key opportunities and forcing New York into reactive defensive sets. That combination allowed them to break the game open. By the end of the third quarter, Golden State had built a commanding cushion that placed significant pressure on the Liberty heading into the final period.

3. Stewart Reaches Historic Franchise Milestone

Despite the team’s struggles, Breanna Stewart reached a notable personal milestone during the contest. She moved past Becky Hammon to claim fifth place on the Liberty’s all-time scoring list. Stewart’s achievement added another chapter to her decorated career in New York, where she has quickly established herself as one of the franchise’s most productive scorers since joining in 2023. Hammon, a former Liberty star turned championship-winning coach with the Las Vegas Aces, had long held a significant place in franchise history, making Stewart’s climb a meaningful statistical moment. At the time of reporting, Stewart had 18 points and nine rebounds, continuing to produce even as the Liberty trailed significantly in the fourth quarter.
