The Denver Broncos came within one win of the Super Bowl, falling to the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game in a contest defined more by defense than offense. Playing without starting quarterback Bo Nix, Denver struggled to move the ball, but its defense kept the game close by limiting New England to just 10 points.

That performance was emblematic of a season-long trend for the Broncos, who finished with the NFL’s second-ranked defense in 2025. Under defensive coordinator Vance Joseph, the unit evolved into one of the league’s most reliable and disruptive groups, anchoring Denver’s postseason run.

The success of that defense has not gone unnoticed around the league. Joseph, a veteran coach with both coordinator and head-coaching experience, has emerged as a candidate in several head-coaching searches this offseason.

Now, an offhand remark from Broncos linebacker Jonathon Cooper has added intrigue to Joseph’s future. Cooper’s comments after the AFC title game hinted that an announcement could be imminent, sparking speculation that Joseph may soon be leaving Denver for another opportunity.

1. A Defense That Carried Denver

Denver’s season was built on defensive consistency. Even in the AFC Championship Game, with the offense sputtering, the Broncos stayed competitive because of a unit that refused to break. Holding the Patriots to 10 points on the league’s biggest stage outside the Super Bowl reinforced the identity Joseph had cultivated. It was a fitting capstone to a season in which Denver’s defense routinely compensated for offensive limitations. The Broncos’ defensive ranking reflected that growth. After finishing 29th in overall defense during Joseph’s first year back as coordinator, Denver climbed to seventh in 2024 and second this past season. That turnaround reshaped the trajectory of the franchise and elevated Joseph’s profile across the league. What began as a reclamation project for a struggling unit turned into one of the NFL’s most respected defenses in just two years.

2. Cooper’s Comment and Coaching Interest

Joseph’s name has circulated widely in head-coaching discussions, and Cooper’s postgame interview only intensified the chatter. “He’s the best DC I’ve had,” Cooper said, before stumbling over his words and appearing to suggest that Joseph’s future plans were already in motion. The remark, reported by DNVR Broncos, carried the tone of someone who may have revealed more than intended. While Cooper stopped short of confirming anything, his phrasing suggested that Joseph could soon be announced as a head coach. Joseph has interviewed with multiple teams during this hiring cycle. He met with the Baltimore Ravens, though they ultimately hired Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter to replace John Harbaugh. He also spoke with the New York Giants and Tennessee Titans, both of whom filled their openings by hiring Harbaugh and Robert Saleh, respectively. With several teams still searching, Joseph remains in play despite not yet landing a job.

3. Arizona Connection and What Comes Next

Among the remaining openings, Joseph has been linked most closely to the Arizona Cardinals. The connection is rooted in familiarity, as Joseph served as Arizona’s defensive coordinator from 2019 to 2022. The Cardinals are seeking stability after a turbulent three-year stretch under first-time head coach Jonathan Gannon. An experienced leader like Joseph, with a track record of rebuilding a defense, fits the profile of what Arizona appears to be targeting. Joseph also brings prior head-coaching experience, having spent two seasons as Denver’s head coach earlier in his career. While that stint had mixed results, his recent success as a coordinator has reshaped perceptions of his readiness for another opportunity. If Cooper’s comments were a preview of things to come, an announcement could be imminent. Meanwhile, Denver’s staff could undergo broader changes, with assistants Davis Webb and Jim Leonhard also drawing interest for roles elsewhere, potentially reshaping the Broncos’ coaching structure ahead of next season.
