The Golden State Valkyries continued their impressive campaign with a convincing 76-67 victory over the defending champion New York Liberty, and while several players contributed to the statement win, point guard Veronica Burton once again demonstrated why she remains the heartbeat of the franchise.

At first glance, Burton’s recent statistics suggest she has taken a step backward from the season in which she earned the WNBA’s Most Improved Player award. Her scoring has dipped, her shooting percentages have declined, and questions have surfaced about whether the heavy workload is beginning to affect her performance.

Yet Sunday’s victory served as a reminder that leadership cannot always be measured by points. Burton orchestrated Golden State’s offense, directed teammates into position, defended one of the league’s most dangerous backcourts, and finished with a team-high eight assists while posting an outstanding plus-25 rating.

For the Valkyries, Burton’s influence goes far beyond individual production. Her ability to organize the offense, set the defensive tone, and lead under pressure continues to make her one of the team’s most indispensable players as Golden State builds momentum this season.

1. Burton’s Impact Goes Beyond Scoring

Although Burton’s scoring numbers have declined in recent weeks, her overall influence on games remains as strong as ever. Against the Liberty, she consistently made the right decisions, helping Golden State maintain control against one of the WNBA’s top teams.

As the team’s primary ball-handler, Burton directed the offense with confidence, creating opportunities for teammates throughout the night. Her eight assists reflected not only her vision but also her willingness to prioritize team success over individual statistics.

On the defensive end, Burton accepted another difficult assignment by helping contain New York star Sabrina Ionescu and the Liberty’s talented group of perimeter playmakers. Her pressure disrupted Boston’s offensive rhythm and played a major role in limiting quality scoring opportunities.

The combination of elite defense, smart decision-making, and steady leadership highlighted why Burton remains one of the league’s most complete point guards, even during stretches when her own shot is not consistently falling.

2. Coaches and Teammates Praise Her Leadership

Following the victory, Burton’s teammates emphasized that her value extends well beyond the numbers recorded on the stat sheet. Veteran forward Kaila Charles described Burton as the team’s unquestioned leader and floor general, praising her ability to shoulder responsibilities on both ends of the court.

Charles noted that Burton is asked to run the offense while also defending many of the opposing team’s top perimeter threats. Handling both assignments requires exceptional composure, preparation, and endurance throughout every game.

Head coach Natalie Nakase echoed those sentiments, explaining that Burton embraces the difficult conversations required of a team captain. According to Nakase, leadership is not limited to making plays but also includes holding teammates accountable and ensuring everyone remains focused on the team’s goals.

Nakase believes Burton possesses the unique personality needed to balance encouragement with accountability. Whether organizing the offense or challenging teammates to improve, Burton continues to embrace every responsibility placed upon her.

3. Heavy Workload Doesn’t Change Burton’s Mindset

Serving as the engine of the Valkyries has naturally brought physical challenges. Burton has played significant minutes throughout the season, and signs of fatigue have occasionally appeared in her shooting, with some jumpers and floaters coming up short late in games.

Recognizing the demanding workload, Golden State has recently leaned more on backup point guard Kaitlyn Chen to provide additional ball-handling and allow Burton valuable opportunities to rest. The expanded rotation has helped preserve Burton’s energy without sacrificing the team’s overall effectiveness.

Even so, Burton has shown little concern about the physical demands of her role. She said she simply enjoys playing basketball and credits the coaching staff, performance team, and her teammates for helping her remain healthy and prepared throughout the season.

Rather than viewing herself as carrying the franchise alone, Burton believes the Valkyries’ success is built on trust throughout the roster. That team-first mindset continues to define her leadership style and has become one of the biggest reasons Golden State has emerged as one of the league’s most cohesive and competitive teams.
