The New York Knicks moved a step closer to their first NBA championship in more than five decades after edging the San Antonio Spurs 105-104 in a dramatic Game 2 of the 2026 NBA Finals. The victory gave New York a commanding 2-0 series lead and continued its remarkable postseason run.

For much of the night, the Spurs appeared capable of evening the series before it shifted to New York. Despite facing a double-digit deficit in the second half, San Antonio battled back and put itself in position to secure a crucial home victory in the closing minute.

At the center of the comeback effort was Victor Wembanyama, who overcame a slow start to produce another impressive scoring performance. The Spurs star dominated stretches of the second half and nearly carried his team across the finish line with several key baskets.

Yet the final moments belonged to the Knicks. A sequence of missed opportunities, turnovers, and clutch plays ultimately swung the game in New York’s favor, leaving Wembanyama to openly evaluate the decisions that shaped the outcome of one of the Finals’ most dramatic contests.

1. Wembanyama Sparks Spurs Comeback

The game did not begin smoothly for Wembanyama. New York’s defense successfully limited his impact during the opening half, forcing difficult looks and disrupting his rhythm. By halftime, he had struggled to find consistent offensive success and committed several costly turnovers. Everything changed after the break. Wembanyama emerged as the focal point of San Antonio’s offense, attacking aggressively and finding ways to score both inside and from mid-range. His confidence grew with each possession, helping the Spurs gradually erase New York’s advantage. The All-Star forward finished with 29 points while shooting an efficient 11-for-19 from the field. More impressively, 22 of those points came after halftime, highlighting his ability to adjust and respond under pressure on the biggest stage. His performance energized the Spurs and gave the home crowd renewed hope. As San Antonio chipped away at the deficit, Wembanyama became increasingly influential, setting the stage for a tense finish that would ultimately come down to a handful of possessions.

2. Final-Minute Decisions Prove Costly

The Spurs completed their comeback by scoring 14 consecutive points, turning what once appeared to be a comfortable Knicks lead into a tightly contested battle. With less than a minute remaining, Wembanyama drove to the basket, converted through contact, and gave San Antonio a 104-102 advantage. The lead, however, lasted only moments. Jalen Brunson responded with a difficult fallaway jumper that tied the game at 104-104, ensuring that the final possessions would determine the outcome. On San Antonio’s next trip down the floor, Wembanyama attempted a contested long-range two-point shot with roughly 30 seconds remaining. The attempt missed, giving New York another opportunity. Although the Knicks failed to score immediately, the Spurs could not capitalize on the ensuing possession. After securing a defensive rebound, Wembanyama attempted a quick outlet pass that accidentally struck teammate Stephon Castle, resulting in a turnover. Moments later, Brunson drew a foul and converted a free throw that proved to be the winning point. Following the game, Wembanyama defended his shot selection, explaining that the situation demanded an aggressive scoring mindset rather than a cautious approach.

3. Knicks Capitalize and Take Control

While San Antonio focused on its late-game mistakes, New York deserved considerable credit for maintaining composure under pressure. The Knicks received important contributions throughout the lineup and continued to demonstrate the balance that has defined their postseason success. Karl-Anthony Towns led the way with 21 points and 13 rebounds, delivering another strong all-around performance. Mikal Bridges added 20 points, while OG Anunoby provided one of the game’s most memorable moments with a powerful late dunk that halted the Spurs’ momentum during their comeback attempt. Defensively, New York adjusted effectively in the closing stages. Mitchell Robinson was used extensively against Wembanyama during the final minute, helping make every shot attempt more difficult. Those defensive possessions proved just as important as any basket scored by the Knicks. The victory extended New York’s postseason winning streak to 13 games and placed the franchise in rare historical company. The Knicks became only the third team in NBA Finals history to win the first two games of a championship series on the road. With Games 3 and 4 shifting to Madison Square Garden, New York now finds itself firmly in control, while San Antonio faces the challenge of recovering from two heartbreaking home losses.
