The Philadelphia 76ers walked away from Madison Square Garden disappointed after another close loss to the New York Knicks, but not discouraged. Despite falling 108-102 in Game 2 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series, the 76ers believe they showed enough competitiveness to remain confident heading into the next phase of the matchup.

Philadelphia controlled stretches of the game and held a narrow lead for much of the night before momentum shifted heavily in New York’s favor during the fourth quarter. The Knicks closed the game with greater execution and composure, securing a 2-0 series lead as the matchup now moves to Philadelphia.

Rookie guard VJ Edgecombe emerged as one of the brighter signs for the 76ers in defeat. After a relatively quiet Game 1, Edgecombe responded with a more aggressive offensive performance while also embracing the physical nature of the series against one of the Eastern Conference’s deepest teams.

Following the game, Edgecombe described the series exactly the way many observers expected: a “dogfight.” Even with Philadelphia facing growing pressure, the young guard made it clear the 76ers have no intention of backing down as they prepare for a critical Game 3 on their home floor.

1. Edgecombe Shows Growth In Game 2

After struggling to make a major offensive impact in the series opener, Edgecombe looked significantly more comfortable during Game 2. The rookie guard played with greater confidence offensively and provided Philadelphia with important perimeter scoring throughout the night. Edgecombe finished the game shooting 6-for-13 from the field while connecting on three of his seven attempts from beyond the arc. His willingness to attack offensively gave the 76ers another reliable scoring option alongside Tyrese Maxey and Paul George. For a Philadelphia team still trying to establish chemistry after a season filled with lineup changes and injuries, Edgecombe’s development has become increasingly important. The rookie continues to gain valuable postseason experience while adjusting to the intensity and physicality of playoff basketball. Although the 76ers ultimately could not close out the victory, Edgecombe’s improved performance offered one of the few encouraging takeaways from the loss. His ability to remain composed in a difficult road environment reflected the confidence the organization continues to place in him moving forward.

2. Physical Series Living Up To Expectations

Edgecombe acknowledged after the game that the series against New York has been exactly as demanding as expected. According to the rookie, every contest has felt like a physical and emotional battle that could easily be decided in the final minutes. The Knicks have repeatedly demonstrated why they are considered one of the toughest teams remaining in the playoffs. Led by Jalen Brunson and supported by a balanced lineup featuring Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges, New York has consistently found ways to execute under pressure. Philadelphia, meanwhile, has shown resilience despite entering the postseason as the seventh seed. The 76ers already exceeded expectations by eliminating the Boston Celtics in the opening round, a result few predicted considering the team’s inconsistent regular season. Still, the lack of continuity throughout the year continues to affect Philadelphia at critical moments. Injuries and roster instability prevented the group from building long-term chemistry, and those issues have occasionally surfaced late in games against a disciplined Knicks squad.

3. 76ers Focused On Protecting Home Court

Despite trailing 2-0, the 76ers remain determined to make the series competitive as it shifts back to Philadelphia. Edgecombe emphasized after the game that the team has not lost confidence and fully expects to continue fighting throughout the series. The rookie guard stressed that New York simply accomplished what playoff teams are expected to do by protecting home court during the opening two games. Now, Philadelphia hopes to respond in the same way at Xfinity Mobile Arena. The pressure surrounding Game 3 is enormous for the 76ers. Historically, teams that fall behind 3-0 in an NBA playoff series almost never recover, making the upcoming matchup potentially decisive for Philadelphia’s postseason hopes. Even so, Edgecombe’s comments reflected a locker room that still believes it can compete with New York. The 76ers know improvement is necessary, particularly in late-game execution, but they remain convinced the series can still become the “dogfight” Edgecombe expects over the coming games.
