The Golden State Warriors are beginning to look like themselves again. Winners of four of their last five games, including a convincing 126–113 victory over the New York Knicks, the Warriors have steadied their season after weeks of uneven play. The recent stretch has reinforced a sense that momentum is finally building.

At the same time, change appears inevitable. Jonathan Kuminga’s situation has reached a breaking point, positioning the young forward as a central trade piece before the Feb. 5 deadline. While Golden State’s on-court results have improved, the roster remains in flux.

Kuminga’s absence has been conspicuous. The 22-year-old has not logged a single minute in nearly a month, a clear signal that his role in Golden State has effectively ended. Both sides have acknowledged the disconnect, with Kuminga and his camp requesting a trade.

Despite the uncertainty, the Warriors have kept their focus on winning. For a veteran core accustomed to navigating turbulence, the situation represents another obstacle rather than a derailment as Golden State looks to strengthen its lineup for a playoff push.

1. Kuminga’s Exit Becomes Inevitable

Kuminga’s days in a Warriors uniform appear numbered. Once viewed as a cornerstone of the franchise’s next era, he has fallen completely out of the rotation, leaving little ambiguity about his standing with the coaching staff. The lack of playing time has only reinforced the sense that a split is necessary. Kuminga’s trade request reflects frustration with stalled development and limited opportunity, particularly for a player who still believes he can grow into a featured role elsewhere. From the organization’s perspective, the situation has become untenable. Keeping a young player sidelined while his value stagnates benefits neither side, especially with the trade deadline fast approaching. As a result, league insiders widely expect Kuminga to be moved. The remaining question is not if he will be traded, but how Golden State chooses to leverage his contract to address its own needs.

2. Curry and Warriors Stay Locked In

While roster uncertainty can often distract a team, Stephen Curry has made it clear that this has not been the case in Golden State. The Warriors’ veteran leadership has insulated the locker room from outside noise. “It’s not a distraction at all,” Curry said, emphasizing the team’s focus on performance rather than speculation. His comments reflect the mindset of a group that understands roster questions are part of the NBA landscape. Golden State’s recent play supports that claim. The ball movement has sharpened, defensive intensity has improved, and the offense has rediscovered its rhythm during the current stretch. For Curry and the core, the Kuminga situation is simply business to be resolved by management. Their priority remains stacking wins and positioning themselves as a dangerous postseason opponent.

3. What Comes Next for Golden State

The Warriors’ direction in a Kuminga trade remains unclear. High-end targets such as Trey Murphy are effectively off the table due to prohibitive asking prices, while other rumored names have not materialized into serious pursuits. More realistically, Golden State could look to address longstanding roster gaps. A reliable center remains a need, and Kuminga’s contract could help facilitate a deal that balances immediate impact with financial flexibility. From Kuminga’s perspective, the next stop will define his career trajectory. A fresh environment could offer him the minutes and responsibility he has been seeking, allowing him to test whether his potential translates into consistent production. For the Warriors, the outcome will be judged by results. If a Kuminga deal strengthens the rotation and sustains their recent momentum, the separation may be remembered as a necessary step rather than a missed opportunity.
