The Golden State Warriors are approaching a pivotal offseason, but their first priority is not trades or draft strategy—it is determining whether Steve Kerr will remain on the sideline. With Kerr’s contract expiring after the 2025–26 season, both sides have entered a series of meetings aimed at clarifying their shared future.
Kerr has consistently expressed a desire to keep coaching, both publicly and in private conversations with team leadership. Those discussions intensified last week when Kerr met with owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. to evaluate the team’s direction and his role in it.
Early indications from those meetings have been encouraging. There is a growing belief within the organization that Kerr will return, though no formal agreement has been reached. The tone has been constructive, with both sides committed to exploring what changes may be necessary to remain competitive.
Still, the outcome is far from certain. The next round of discussions is expected to focus heavily on alignment—specifically whether Kerr and the front office can agree on a clear plan for the roster and the team’s championship aspirations.
1. Alignment On The Sideline
At the heart of these discussions is a shared understanding that philosophical alignment matters as much as contractual terms. Kerr and the Warriors are not simply negotiating a deal—they are evaluating whether their visions for the team’s future match closely enough to justify moving forward together. Despite occasional uncertainty late in the season, particularly after the team’s play-in exit, Warriors leadership has remained firm in its desire to retain Kerr. Lacob and Dunleavy believe continuity on the bench is a key factor in sustaining success, especially given Kerr’s track record. Importantly, the franchise has not explored alternative coaching options. League sources indicate the Warriors have neither compiled a list of replacements nor initiated contact with other candidates, reinforcing their focus on keeping Kerr. For his part, Kerr has also stayed committed to the organization. He has not pursued outside opportunities, signaling that his priority is to find common ground with the Warriors rather than seek a fresh start elsewhere.
2. Roster Questions Loom Large
While coaching continuity is a priority, the broader context of these talks is shaped by significant roster decisions. The Warriors are entering an offseason filled with uncertainty, particularly regarding key veterans and long-term financial commitments. Among the biggest questions involves Jimmy Butler, who is expected to miss a substantial portion of the 2026–27 season while recovering from an ACL injury. His status complicates the team’s ability to plan both competitively and financially. Another major decision centers on Draymond Green, who holds a $27.6 million player option. Whether Green remains with the team or becomes part of a larger trade package could significantly influence the Warriors’ roster construction. If Golden State chooses to pursue a major upgrade, Butler and Green represent the most viable contracts to include in trade discussions alongside draft assets. The potential value of the team’s lottery pick—especially if it lands in the top four—adds another layer of complexity to these decisions.
3. Urgency Around Curry’s Timeline
Underlying every decision is the reality of Stephen Curry’s career timeline. Lacob has made it clear that the organization intends to maximize its championship window while Curry remains an elite player, even if it requires significant financial investment. This urgency is shaping both roster strategy and coaching discussions. Kerr’s willingness to adapt to potential changes—whether stylistic or personnel-driven—will play a critical role in determining whether he returns. At the same time, the Warriors are exercising patience. Since their elimination on April 17, the organization has given Kerr space to carefully consider his future, recognizing the magnitude of the decision for both sides. A resolution is expected soon, potentially before the franchise travels to Chicago for key pre-draft events. Until then, optimism remains tempered by the understanding that agreement is not guaranteed.
