The Orlando Magic delivered one of their most thrilling wins of the season Thursday night, edging the Dallas Mavericks 115–114 in a dramatic finish that unfolded in the final seconds.
With time winding down and the Mavericks clinging to a one-point lead, Orlando opted not to call a timeout after a key defensive stop. Instead, the Magic trusted their players to attack quickly before Dallas could set up its defense.
That decision proved decisive. Guard Jalen Suggs pushed the pace in transition and initiated a two-man action with center Wendell Carter Jr., creating the opening that would ultimately decide the game.
Carter punctuated the sequence with a powerful dunk in traffic, sealing the victory and sending the home crowd into celebration while reinforcing Orlando’s determination to remain competitive in the Eastern Conference playoff race.
1. A Bold Final Possession
The decisive play began after Orlando forced a defensive stand with less than 10 seconds remaining. Rather than slowing the pace to organize a set play, the Magic quickly moved the ball up the floor. Suggs led the charge, attacking the defense while being closely guarded by veteran shooter Klay Thompson. As the play developed, Suggs initiated a pick-and-roll with Carter near the top of the key. Dallas responded by aggressively trapping Suggs, sending multiple defenders toward the ball handler in an attempt to prevent a clean shot attempt. The defensive pressure briefly disrupted Orlando’s spacing. However, the blitz left Carter open as he rolled toward the basket. Suggs quickly delivered the pass, giving the big man a clear lane to attack the rim.
2. Carter Finishes Above the Defense
As Carter received the pass, the Mavericks scrambled to recover defensively. Several players rotated toward the paint in a last-ditch effort to contest the shot. Among them was rookie forward Cooper Flagg, who attempted to challenge Carter’s drive at the rim. Flagg rose to contest the play, hoping to prevent the go-ahead basket. Carter, however, elevated with authority and finished the play with a powerful dunk, overpowering the contest and giving Orlando the lead with only seconds remaining. The moment capped an aggressive offensive decision by the Magic and highlighted Carter’s physical presence near the basket, turning a high-pressure situation into the game-winning play.
3. Magic Stay Alive in Tight Playoff Race
The victory carried significant implications for Orlando’s postseason hopes. Despite dealing with numerous injuries throughout the season, the Magic continue to remain competitive in the crowded Eastern Conference standings. Key players have missed time, including Suggs earlier in the year and forward Franz Wagner, who remains sidelined indefinitely with an ankle injury. Those absences have forced Orlando to rely on depth and resilience. Even with those challenges, the team improved to 33–28 with the victory, keeping them firmly within reach of the sixth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Magic now sit just half a game behind the Philadelphia 76ers for the final automatic playoff spot. Competition for that position remains intense. Teams such as the Charlotte Hornets, Atlanta Hawks, and Miami Heat are also surging as the regular season approaches its final stretch.
