The Houston Texans have reestablished themselves as a consistent playoff presence under head coach DeMeco Ryans, but the next step in their progression remains elusive. Despite reaching the postseason in consecutive years, the franchise has yet to advance beyond the Divisional Round in its current window of contention.

Each of the past three playoff runs has ended in disappointment, with Houston falling short against different opponents along the way. The Texans were eliminated by the Baltimore Ravens, followed by a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, and most recently were knocked out in difficult conditions against the New England Patriots in Foxborough.

The repeated postseason exits have created a growing sense of urgency within the organization as it prepares for the 2026 season. While the team has established itself as competitive, the inability to break through to the AFC Championship Game has become a clear point of frustration.

That frustration is now shaping the tone of the offseason, with leaders inside the locker room pushing for a stronger collective response. Among them, star pass rusher Will Anderson Jr. has emerged as one of the most vocal voices calling for accountability and improvement.

1. Anderson Calls for Higher Standards

During organized team activities, Anderson addressed the team’s recent playoff history and the need for a more urgent approach moving forward. He made it clear that the Texans can no longer be satisfied with simply reaching the postseason. Anderson pointed to the team’s consistent failure to advance past the second round as a key motivator. In his view, the organization has reached a point where incremental progress is no longer enough, and expectations must be elevated across the board. The star edge rusher emphasized that every player in the building must fully commit to the team’s goals. His message centered on accountability, suggesting that those unwilling to match the required level of urgency would need to adjust quickly. Despite the firm tone, Anderson also expressed optimism about the response he has seen from teammates. He noted that players have been receptive to the challenge and are showing signs of embracing the heightened expectations.

2. Texans Face Pressure to Break Through

While Anderson has been one of the team’s most consistent performers, Houston’s playoff struggles have been largely tied to broader offensive inconsistency. Quarterback C.J. Stroud and the Texans offense have struggled to maintain efficiency in postseason games, limiting the team’s ability to compete deep into January. Defensively, Anderson has been a standout presence in those matchups. In six career playoff games, he has recorded eight sacks and consistently applied pressure on opposing quarterbacks, reinforcing his status as one of the league’s premier young pass rushers. However, individual success has not translated into team advancement. Despite Anderson’s impact, the Texans have repeatedly fallen short against more complete playoff opponents who have executed more effectively in critical moments. That imbalance has placed additional pressure on the roster as a whole heading into the new season. Houston recognizes that reaching the next level will require improvement not just from its defense, but from every phase of the team.

3. Offensive Execution Remains Key Focus

As the Texans prepare for another postseason push, attention is increasingly focused on the offense’s ability to perform under pressure. While the defense has shown it can compete at a high level, offensive consistency has been a deciding factor in recent playoff exits. Stroud remains central to those expectations as he continues his development into a franchise quarterback. The organization is counting on him and the supporting cast to elevate their performance when the stakes are highest. Coaching adjustments, situational execution, and improved efficiency in scoring opportunities are all expected to be priorities entering the season. The Texans understand that narrow margins often define playoff success, and they have repeatedly found themselves on the wrong side of those margins. With leaders like Anderson setting the tone, Houston enters the 2026 campaign with a clear message: regular-season success is no longer enough. The challenge now is turning playoff appearances into sustained postseason runs and ultimately a Super Bowl breakthrough.
