Zuby Ejiofor wasted little time proving he belongs at the professional level, delivering an outstanding performance in his NBA Summer League debut for the Atlanta Hawks. The former St. John’s standout showcased the energy, toughness, and versatility that made him one of college basketball’s most productive forwards and immediately caught the attention of teammates and observers alike.

Before Ejiofor began his NBA journey, legendary St. John’s head coach Rick Pitino had publicly expressed confidence in his former star as interest from NBA teams continued to grow. Based on the rookie’s first appearance in Summer League, Pitino’s endorsement already appears well-founded.

Atlanta received an immediate boost from Ejiofor during its 82-77 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Salt Lake City. His relentless effort on both ends of the floor helped fuel the Hawks while demonstrating the all-around game that made him one of the Big East Conference’s premier players.

Although Summer League serves primarily as a developmental environment, standout performances often leave lasting impressions. Ejiofor’s debut not only highlighted his individual talent but also suggested he could compete for opportunities as he begins his first professional season.

1. A Dominant First Impression

Ejiofor finished his Summer League debut with an outstanding double-double, recording 19 points and 15 rebounds in Atlanta’s victory over Oklahoma City. His performance reflected the physical style of play and nonstop motor that defined his collegiate career.

Throughout the game, the rookie consistently battled for rebounds, attacked the basket with confidence, and provided valuable energy whenever he was on the floor. His willingness to compete on every possession quickly earned the respect of teammates.

Following the victory, several Hawks players celebrated Ejiofor’s effort by enthusiastically referring to him as a “grown man,” a reflection of the maturity and physicality he displayed against professional competition.

Beyond the impressive numbers, it was his overall approach that stood out. Ejiofor consistently played with intensity, embracing contact and making the type of hustle plays that often earn young players increased opportunities within an NBA rotation.

2. Skills Built At St. John’s

Ejiofor’s performance came as little surprise to those who followed his career at St. John’s. Under Pitino’s guidance, he developed into one of the nation’s most complete forwards while earning recognition as the Big East Player of the Year.

His offensive versatility was on display throughout the game against the Thunder. In addition to scoring around the basket through strength and positioning, Ejiofor also knocked down a shot from beyond the three-point line, demonstrating the expanding skill set he developed during his college career.

One sequence in particular highlighted his composure. Facing defensive pressure in the post, Ejiofor calmly worked through a double team before finishing at the rim, showcasing both patience and confidence in a difficult situation.

Those qualities became hallmarks of his time with the Red Storm. His combination of effort, physical play, and improving offensive game helped transform St. John’s into one of the nation’s top programs during his collegiate career.

3. Building Momentum In Atlanta

Ejiofor now joins an intriguing rookie class in Atlanta that includes first-round selection Kingston Flemings, who was chosen with the 23rd overall pick after an impressive collegiate career at Houston. Together, the newcomers provide the Hawks with additional youth and depth as the organization continues developing its roster.

For Ejiofor, earning a long-term role will require continuing to display the same energy and consistency that defined his Summer League debut. Players who rebound, defend, and embrace physical play often carve out valuable roles regardless of where they were selected in the draft.

His path to the NBA also represents a significant achievement for St. John’s. Ejiofor helped end the program’s 27-year absence from the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament while contributing to consecutive Big East championship runs under Pitino’s leadership.

In addition, his selection marked another important milestone for the university by ending an 11-year stretch without producing a first-round NBA Draft pick. If his Summer League debut is any indication, Ejiofor appears ready to build on that accomplishment while pursuing a successful professional career with the Hawks.
